The Nervous System

Your nervous system is constantly taking in information, often before your conscious mind has had time to make sense of it.

It notices changes in your environment, responds to stress and safety, and influences everything from your heart rate and breathing to your emotions, attention, and physical sensations.

Learning to recognize those responses can help you understand yourself more clearly. It can also be an important foundation for intuitive work, because not every flutter in your stomach, racing heart, sudden tension, or feeling of unease is necessarily intuition. Sometimes your body is responding to stress, memory, anticipation, overstimulation, or something subtle in your environment.

Knowing your own patterns gives you a better place to begin.

Listen to the Body

When your nervous system senses stress or potential danger, your body may prepare to fight, flee, freeze, or protect itself in other ways. Your heart may beat faster. Your breathing may become shallow. Your muscles may tighten. You might feel restless, irritable, overwhelmed, numb, or unusually alert.

When you feel safe and settled, your body tends to behave differently. Breathing becomes easier. Muscles soften. Thoughts may become clearer. You may feel more present, connected, curious, or open.

Neither state is inherently good or bad. These responses are part of a system designed to help you navigate the world.

The useful part is learning to notice them.

Why It Matters for Intuition

Intuition and nervous-system responses can sometimes feel surprisingly similar. Both may arrive quickly and through the body.

Instead of immediately deciding this feeling means something, pause and get curious. Am I tired? Hungry? Stressed? Have I been thinking about this already? Does this situation remind me of something I've experienced before? What was I feeling just before this sensation appeared?

You don’t need to dismiss the feeling simply because there may be a physical or emotional explanation. You’re gathering information before deciding what it means.

That’s discernment.

Try this.

Choose a moment when you feel relatively calm and comfortable.
Take a minute to notice yourself without trying to change anything.

How does your breathing feel? Where are you holding tension?
What does your stomach feel like? Is your mind busy or quiet?
Do you feel warm, cool, heavy, light, open, restless?

This is one small snapshot of you at baseline.

Try it at different times and in different situations. With practice, you may become more familiar with your own patterns and more likely to notice when something genuinely changes.

The more you understand the signals your body already sends, the easier it becomes to approach the ones you don’t understand with curiosity rather than assumption.
